Powerline Procedures is the result of a year long university project, in which our team developed an educational mobile game for our client Energy Queensland, with the goal being to teach a wider demographic about electrical safety, and correct procedures involving overhead powerlines. The first half of the year was spent planning the project, creating documentation, and researching, whilst the second half was spent developing it.

In Powerline Procedures, the player uses their phone to look around the environment, much like they're using the phone's camera to look into another world. In this environment, workers and other citizens are going about their daily lives, but keep running into dangerous situations. It's the player's job to inspect these dangerous situations, and answer question prompts regarding the situation. Both correct and incorrect answers will teach the player about correct procedures, and continue the level.

My involvement for Powerline Procedures was mostly designing key gameplay elements and initial conceptualisation. With the team never having developed a serious educational game before, our initial idea was very confined. I wasn't happy with the initial design, so I reworked it to try and create something a bit more engaging and fun, resulting in the current iteration. Alongside designing the gameplay, my other major role was project management, creating sprint backlogs and making sure everyone was on track to meet deadlines. I also aided in creating some 3D models, but stopped partway through in favour of using asset packs to better decorate the level.

By the end of the project, the client was very pleased with the product. Whether Energy Queensland will expand upon the base project is yet to be seen.
